Frequently Cited Home Health Requirements: How to Avoid Them​

Home Health is a continuously evolving industry. Sustaining compliance and keeping abreast of the changes can be challenging for an organization of any size. The verbiage within the requirements and standards is not always clearly stated and may be interpreted differently than intended. As a Home Health agency, you must be able to provide “evidence” of compliance with the Federal and State requirements, as well as agency policies and procedures and for some organizations, the Accrediting Organization standards. Deficiencies in any of these areas may result in citations. This presentation will provide you with 10 of the most frequently seen citations and guidance on how to avoid them.

Lisa Powell, RN, BSN has years of experience working for an Accrediting Organization surveying Medicare Home Health and Private Duty/Medicaid agencies nationwide.  Prior to surveying for compliance, she worked for Home Health agencies as an Administrator and Director of Clinical Operations for 11 years. 

2022/2023 Diagnoses Code Changes
Speaker: Michael Tidd, LVN, HCS-D, COS-C

Overview

Approximately 1200 new diagnoses code changes will be effective on October 1, 2022. This is a total of new expanded codes, deleted codes and narrative changes to existing codes.  It essential to understand the coding changes to ensure you’re paid appropriately and your claims are not returned for coding corrections.

• Discuss newly expanded, deleted, and narrative changes to codes
• Understand how agencies can be paid appropriately, without claims being
returned for coding corrections

Michael Tidd has over 19 years of experience in the Home Care Industry and is a frequent speaker at HealthCare Synergy Workshops and Webinars. He is a Software Developer, LVN and Certified in ICD-9/10 Coding and OASIS (COS-C, HCS-D). As the Clinical Manager for HealthCare Synergy, he directs the Outsourced Management Services, assists in directing the development of the Healthcare Assistant Web Edition, oversees the Clinical Documentation Auditing provided to clients and directs the Clinical Form Development for the Healthcare Assistant Web Edition. Michael continues to educate agencies in the ongoing regulations that CMS produces, the proper application of the Medicare Conditions of Participation and completing timely, accurate and defendable clinical documentation to survive in the current Medicare Reimbursement Model.

PDGM Case-Mix Changes

Overview

Prior to PDGM becoming effective January 1, 2020, PPS case-mix changes occurred annually. While PDGM case-mix rebalancing didn’t occur in January 2021 d/t COVID, this practice resumed on January 2022. It is essential to understand the case-mix changes so you understand how to budget appropriately and seek out appropriate referral sources to obtain the best paying patient census under these changes. This session will discuss the changes that occurred in 2022 to provide and understanding of how the case-mix model will change in the future. Anticipated changes in the case-mix model for 2023 will be provided in this session passed on the proposed rule that will release in late June or early July.

Dzuy grew up in Pomona, California. He went to college at California Polytechnic University then to Touro University where he received a Master’s of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. After spending a few years practicing Internal Medicine, Dzuy joined Doctor Wu working as a Wound Care Provider. Later, receiving his American Board of Wound Management Certified Wound Specialist certification. Dzuy is currently serving as an adjunct professor to Touro University’s Wound elective rotation.Lately, Dzuy has taken on a new role. He is expanding the Professional Wound Specialist medical model to new regions allowing for the spread of modern wound care modalities into rural and urban areas. To increase the exposure to these wound modalities, he created a wound care education program dedicated to all levels of nursing and practitioners.

Doug helps health care businesses meet compliance and bring digital care management into patients’ homes. He has an administrative and technical background working as a Complex Case Manager for Great West Health Care, an RN for the HEDIS Project at SCAN, and a Supervisor and California Department of Health Care Services Certified Master Trainer at Care First Health Plan.
